55 North is a Copenhagen-based venture capital fund dedicated exclusively to quantum technology. The fund invests across the full quantum stack, including quantum computing, sensing and timing, communications, and the enabling technologies, components and software required to commercialize quantum systems.

With a target size of EUR 300 million and EUR 134 million secured at first close, 55 North is the world’s largest expert led quantum technology venture capital fund. The fund is anchored by EIFO and Novo Holdings.

55 North invests across stages, from early-stage ventures through later growth rounds, combining a strong European focus with a global investment mandate. Approximately 75% of the fund is intended for European companies, including a dedicated Nordic allocation, while the remaining capital can be invested selectively in leading quantum companies worldwide.

The fund invests in enabling technologies, full-stack quantum hardware, software and algorithms across computing, sensing and communications. Its early investments include Finnish superconducting quantum-computing company IQM Quantum Computers (exited via SPAC) and German quantum-cryogenics company Kiutra.

The fund is led by a team combining deep expertise in venture capital, quantum science, engineering, product development and the commercialization of complex deep technologies:

Dr. Owen R. Lozman FRSC is a deep-tech investor and scientist with more than 20 years of R&D leadership and over seven years of venture-capital experience. Before co-founding 55 North, he was Managing Director of M Ventures, Merck’s EUR 1 billion-plus corporate venture-capital platform, where he built the investment team and managed a portfolio of more than 25 companies spanning quantum computing, semiconductors, advanced materials, displays, digital technologies and sustainability. At 55 North, Owen serves as Managing Partner and leads the fund’s investment strategy, institutional partnerships and development of quantum companies from laboratory innovation to global commercial scale.

Dr. Helmut G. Katzgraber is a computational physicist and technology leader with more than 20 years of experience across academia and industry, covering physics, optimization, quantum algorithms and quantum technologies. He was formerly a professor at ETH Zurich and Texas A&M University, received an NSF CAREER Award and was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society. Since 2020, he has led interdisciplinary research teams at Microsoft and Amazon and has advised venture-capital funds on quantum and deep-technology investments. At 55 North, Helmut is Chief Science Officer and General Partner, responsible for scientific diligence, technology assessment and the fund’s long-term view of the quantum landscape.

Dr. Kai M. Hudek is an experimental physicist and engineering executive with more than 15 years of experience designing, building and scaling quantum technologies, systems and products. As an early employee of IonQ, he gained operational experience across the company’s development from seed stage through IPO and held leadership roles spanning R&D, engineering and production. He was also one of IonQ’s most prolific inventors during his tenure. At 55 North, Kai serves as General Partner, bringing a product- and operator-led perspective to technical diligence, company building, manufacturing scale-up and the commercialization of quantum hardware.
